Hey everyone, good afternoon! Today, I want to talk about the importance of not just talking about our health goals but actually taking actionable steps toward achieving them. It’s all about getting after it—whether that means exercising regularly, making better food choices, or sticking to our commitments. Life has a way of throwing us curveballs, but we can adapt and overcome.

I recently found myself on a rainy day, squeezing in my daily walk despite the weather. I’ve made it a goal to hit over 10,000 steps daily, and yes, sometimes that means embracing a little rain. Walking is such an underrated exercise, and it can be done almost anywhere. Did you know that the American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week? That’s just a little over 20 minutes a day—totally achievable!

The Power of Consistency

One of the key elements in my wellness journey has been consistency. I workout at the gym about five to six times a week, and I walk daily. I also make mindful choices about nutrition whenever I can. This wasn’t always easy. After retiring from the military, I found myself gaining weight due to poor food choices and a more sedentary lifestyle. It’s easy to fall into old habits, especially when life gets busy.

To illustrate, I once took a shower after a Holiday celebration and found myself staring at a reflection I barely recognized—a belly that hadn’t been there before. It was a wake-up call, and that’s when I decided to take immediate action. I started by going for a 30-minute walk, then I did some digging to find healthier fast-food options that fit my schedule as a rideshare driver. Simple changes like choosing a salad instead of fries or opting for a baked potato instead of a burger made a world of difference.

“You can’t play around; you need to get serious about your health.”

When it comes to achieving fitness goals, it’s often our mindset that holds us back. There are no shortcuts; hard work and persistence are key. I once lost 36 pounds in just one month by staying active and making small dietary adjustments. That initial success motivated me to keep going, and I even managed to shed a few more pounds to get back to my fitness baseline.

Practical Steps You Can Take

If you’re in a position to make some changes but don’t know where to start, here are some actionable steps:

  • Set Realistic Goals: Start small. Maybe aim for a certain number of steps per day or commit to walking a few times a week.
  • Make a Food Diary: Track what you eat and identify your areas for improvement. It’s amazing how much we can learn about our habits.
  • Get Moving: Incorporate physical activity into your daily life. Take the stairs, go for a walk during lunch, or engage in bodyweight exercises at home.
  • Prioritize Nutrition: Look for healthier options when eating out. Grilled items, salads, and whole grains are usually better choices than fried foods or sugary drinks.
  • Stay Educated: Whether through books, videos, or reputable health websites, always be learning about wellness. Knowledge is empowering!

Don’t forget, the way we feel about ourselves often influences our choices. A positive mindset can work wonders. Many of my clients struggled with weight loss because they wanted quick fixes. However, the truth is that sustainable health takes time. Remember, it’s not just about numbers on a scale; it’s about building a lifestyle that enhances your overall well-being.

If you’re ever feeling overwhelmed, that’s completely normal. You don’t need to change everything overnight. Focus on one or two areas that you can improve right now. Whether that means exercising a bit more, improving your diet, or simply becoming more mindful of your choices, every little step counts. And if you’re looking for inspiration, check out my daily updates where I share what I’m doing in real-time. Your body is your home. It’s time we invest in our well-being and get serious about taking care of it. Remember, it’s never too late to start making positive changes, and every small step adds up to significant progress!
