Good morning, everyone! Today, I want to share a snapshot of my eating day as part of my effortless fat loss program. This approach is all about fine-tuning your calorie intake to maximize fat loss while still feeling energized and satisfied. I’ve been particularly excited about moving into the recomp phase of my program, where my calorie intake is close to maintenance, but I’m still keeping a slight deficit.

During this stage, I alternate my calorie intake throughout the week. On lifting days—three days a week—I incorporate a 300-calorie surplus to boost energy and replenish glycogen stores in my muscles. On the other four days, I maintain a 500-calorie deficit to continue shedding fat. This zigzag approach not only helps me accumulate muscle but also serves to ramp up my metabolism for what I like to call effortless fat loss.

Understanding the Zigzag Approach

If you’ve been on a caloric deficit for about three months, it might be time to consider bumping up your calories. This strategy allows you to replenish glycogen, restore energy levels, and ultimately strengthen your workouts. For instance, by the end of my cutting phase, I weighed 185 pounds. After implementing this new approach, I gained about 5 pounds back, primarily in the form of water and glycogen, but still remained lean at 190 pounds each morning.

When making changes like these, it’s important to listen to your body. The fluctuations can be signaled by increased energy levels, improved workouts, and an enhanced sense of well-being. Studies show that cycling calorie intake may even prevent metabolic adaptation—a phenomenon that can slow down weight loss after prolonged dieting (you can check out research on this at the National Institutes of Health). When you keep your body guessing, it not only remains responsive but also more forgiving.

Starting the Day Right

Before I dive into my morning routine, I start with something you might not expect—electrolytes and a pinch of salt mixed in filtered water. After several hours of sleep, our bodies are often depleted of fluids and essential minerals. Drinking around 16 ounces of water right away helps with rehydration, particularly after an overnight fast.

Then it’s time for my favorite—coffee! During my fasting window, I find that coffee keeps me focused. With a busy agenda running my business and training clients, keeping the mind sharp is crucial. I usually enjoy three to five cups throughout the morning, using them to fuel both my brain and work ethic.

By around 10:30 AM, I’m ready for my first meal—a light yogurt bowl featuring Greek yogurt, fresh fruit, and a drizzle of honey. This gives me the quick-acting carbs and protein I need without weighing me down before my leg day workout. Afterward, I go for a rejuvenating walk to let that food settle before lifting. Remember, training on a full stomach can feel sluggish, especially on leg days!

Post-Workout Nourishment

After an intense workout, I usually indulge in a snack while catching up on my latest binge—right now, it’s the Lord of the Rings series (who doesn’t love epic sagas?). I prepare some air-popped kettle corn, which is a lighter option while still being super satisfying.

For lunch, I treat myself to a delectable combination of sautéed ground beef (80/20) and two eggs, cooked in beef tallow for a touch of healthy fat. Here’s a simple yet nutritious tip: always rinse your rice before cooking. It makes a world of difference in texture, ensuring it remains fluffy rather than clumpy. I pile my meal onto a bed of rice and top it with a splash of hot sauce for extra flavor.

At the end of the day, my total calorie intake for the day hits around 3,100 calories, rich in protein, healthy fats, and satisfying carbs—everything I need to support both workouts and recovery.

So, let’s open a dialogue! If you have any questions about balancing your diet, fat loss, or even meal prep tips, don’t hesitate to leave a comment or send me a direct message.
