When it comes to staying healthy as we age, most of us have been led to believe we need a hardcore gym routine or long-distance runs to make a real difference. But I’ve got good news—staying active for health and longevity doesn’t have to be complicated, painful, or even time-consuming. In fact, some of the best exercises are the ones that feel like regular life.

I used to be a daily runner—three miles a day, every day. And yet, despite all that effort, I was still overweight. My knees hurt, and I wasn’t getting the results I wanted. Sound familiar? If so, you’re not alone.

Movement That Matches Real Life

Let’s take a cue from some of the world’s longest-living people. In places like the Mediterranean, Japan, and other Blue Zones, the people who thrive into their 90s and beyond aren’t spending hours in the gym. They’re doing daily life—gardening, cooking, walking, carrying groceries, and chasing kids or goats (yes, goats!).

Activities like vacuuming, scrubbing floors, or tending a garden aren’t just chores—they’re excellent functional movement. Bending to pick up vegetables or weeding flower beds involves deep knee bends, balance, and endurance. And best of all? You don’t need a membership or fancy gear.

Even walking alone has major perks. Studies show that walking just 5,000 to 7,000 steps a day significantly reduces the risk of metabolic conditions like diabetes. Another fascinating study found that people living in walkable cities are 31% less likely to be overweight or obese compared to those in car-dependent suburbs. That’s a big deal.

I experienced it myself. During a year abroad in London—one of the most walkable cities—my family didn’t own a car. We walked everywhere: to the store, to school, to the theater. By the end of the year, without dieting or joining a gym, I’d lost 40 pounds.

Small Moves, Big Wins

One of my favorite concepts is something I call “exercise snacking.” It’s exactly what it sounds like—small bursts of movement throughout your day that add up.

  • Do deep knee bends while brushing your teeth.
  • Lift a heavy pan while washing dishes—hello, impromptu bicep curls!
  • Hold a couch plank during TV commercials.
  • Put on a song and dance for two minutes while waiting on the coffee maker.

None of these require fancy clothes or equipment. And honestly, they’re more fun than forcing yourself through a workout you hate.

If you’ve got a dog, that’s even better. Dogs are nature’s built-in accountability partners. They don’t care if it’s cold—they want to walk. They also help you socialize. Studies have shown that dog owners are more active and more likely to meet new people, simply from walking their pups around the neighborhood.

One more tip that’s often overlooked: walk after dinner. A study I mentioned in one of my earlier books found that people who walked just 10 minutes after dinner consistently lost more weight and had better blood sugar control than those who walked before eating. It’s a gentle way to support digestion, connect with others, and wind down your day—win-win-win.

What (Not) to Do

Here’s one you might not expect: don’t eat before exercise. Exercising in a fasted state allows more blood to flow to your muscles instead of being redirected to your digestive system. This gives you better energy, performance, and results—whether you’re walking the dog or doing squats in your kitchen.

Also, don’t let exercise gadgets fool you. While fitness trackers can be motivating, many exaggerate calorie burn. Use them as a nudge to move more, not as gospel. The real magic comes from consistency and variety—not numbers on a screen.

“The best workout isn’t the hardest—it’s the one you actually enjoy enough to stick with.”

You don’t have to overhaul your entire lifestyle to feel better. A few mindful steps—literally—can set you on a powerful path to long-term health. So lace up your shoes, take a stroll after dinner, toss a ball with your kids, or just dance in your kitchen. Every little bit counts. And I’ll be right here cheering you on.
