Life is a journey, and sometimes it leads us to places we never expected. About seven weeks ago, I found myself at a heavy 165 pounds with over 20% body fat—definitely not my proudest moment. Looking back, I realize this wasn’t just about weight but about how I felt in my own skin. I was chasing the elusive 315-pound bench press, focusing solely on building strength. In the process, I lost sight of what truly matters: my overall well-being and how I felt about myself.
Fast forward to now, and I’ve embarked on a remarkable transformation. After an aggressive cut, I’ve lost 15 pounds and feel better both physically and mentally. It’s essential to share my journey in a candid way so you can learn from my experience and perhaps find your own path to a healthier lifestyle.
Understanding the Cutting Process
The first lesson I learned was the importance of adjusting my training routine, particularly during a cut. Initially, I was all about that volume—doing multiple sets of bench presses was the norm for me. But during a cut, especially a rigorous one, my body couldn’t keep up with high-volume training. As a result, I shifted to a lower-volume, high-intensity approach. This meant fewer sets and fewer reps while keeping the intensity up as close to failure as possible. By doing this, not only could I recover better, but I also maintained my strength, which is crucial for preserving muscle during a caloric deficit.
The importance of strength cannot be overstated. A study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research noted that maintaining strength during a cut helps preserve lean muscle mass. So, while I scaled back my bench pressing, I focused on dumbbell incline benches, leveraging the strength I had built previously.
Creating a Sustainable Diet
When it came to my diet, I aimed for a caloric deficit of 400 to 800 calories. This involved some careful planning as I wanted to ensure I had enough energy to maintain my workouts. On tough days, I allowed myself a smaller deficit to aid recovery, especially on weekends. Meal prepping was essential for this journey. Incorporating lean proteins, nutritious veggies, and whole grains became my go-to plan. The idea is to eat in a way that fuels your body, rather than just depriving it.
- Stay Hydrated: Water is crucial for not just hydration but also for maintaining energy levels. When you’re cutting back on calories, you need every ounce of energy you can get!
- Watch Your Micronutrients: Ensure you’re hitting your vitamins and minerals, as they play a big role in how your body performs, especially when you’re in a caloric deficit.
- Flexible Cardio: My cardio of choice was the Stairmaster, but it doesn’t have to be yours. Find something you love—whether that’s running, cycling, or even dancing! What matters is that it’s enjoyable and sustainable for you.
The worst thing you can do is force yourself into a cardio routine you dislike. The key is consistency. You should be able to do cardio daily without it draining your motivation. Burn about 400 calories through any enjoyable activity, and you’ll be on your way to success.
The Power of Community and Environment
One of the most overlooked aspects of this journey is the role of community. Surrounding yourself with supportive, health-conscious friends can make all the difference. I found tremendous motivation through my group of friends who were equally dedicated to their health goals. We shared our challenges and victories, which made the whole process more enjoyable. If you don’t have that support in your immediate circle, take to social media or local meet-ups. Connecting with others who share similar goals can inspire and motivate you to stay on track.

Your environment is influential too. If you’re surrounded by temptation—like cookies and cakes—it’s much harder to stick to your diet. Instead, fill your home with wholesome foods that support your goals. Set yourself up for success by making it harder to make poor food choices.
As I continue this journey, my next goal is to cut another 10 pounds and reach my leanest physique while maintaining strength. Remember, time is going to pass anyway. If you’re contemplating making a change, why not start now? Lock in your focus, guilt-free, and take the first step toward your healthiest self. You’re not alone in this; I’ve got your back every step of the way!
